Last week I attended the the virtual world forums in one of the coolest conference venue I’ve been at for a long time …The Sweeney meets Blade Runner….well maybe that’s an exagerration but cool nonetheless.
Kicked off with Lord Puttnam’s well publicised keynote
Overall the presentations were much as expected but there was some interesting stuff much of it blogged by people much faster to the keyboard than I am and all linked from the site.
A few things I took away from the conference. There are some very bright, creative and fun people working in the sector. Second Life has a lot more competition, than I had first realised :-) and a conversation with a guy from the electric sheep company made me reflect on my moaning about Second Life. He said he suspected that my gripes about virtual worlds not living up to the hype is that after playing with them off and on since 1995 I just expected more out of them by now. To be fair I think he’s partly right. But I still think they are spaces looking for a reason to exist and none of the reasons seem that compelling to me yet. They are social networking tools not educational tools.
